In the spring of 1955 The Women's Society of Christian Service
completed this quilt. The needle work on each patch was done by each lady as one could. A
quilting frame was set up in the school house for the ladies to place their patch as one
could. A final quilting party was scheduled. Mrs. Myrtle Hughes was present and remembers
Mrs. Tessie Tanner, who had expertise in quilting and Mrs.Elmer Pope who provided the fun
and probably the food, and several others finished this project. Each name on this represents $ 1:00 given to Epworth's Children Home. Buddy and Rhae Cribb, Myrtle Hughes, Harriet Huggins, Odell Rogers, Pearl Canty and some others delivered this quilt and $ 296.00 to Epworth. They were guest for lunch along with the children in the cafeteria. Buddy's passion began to grow as all of us remembered those sad and lonely faces of the children. Much sacrifice was given to accomplish this project. Extra dollar bills were hard to come by. Travel was difficult, dirt roads, muddy roads and limited vehicles were a hardship. never the less this project was accomplished. This quilt kept many children at Epworth warm for many years. How did we get this precious memory filled quilt back to Ebenezer? When Joel Jones was pastor here, a pastor friend of his called and told him that a quilt with the name Ebenezer Church from Hemingway was in a gift shop in Lexington S.C.. Ella Lou Powell called her sister in Columbia S.C. and ask her to purchase it for us. She did so for $ 25.00 and Ella Lou went to Columbia and brought it back home. It was indeed a pitiful sight to behold. Parts of it were burned, names ruffled, partly missing, and needed a lot of work. Dry cleaning was tried but to no avail. Elaine Pope washed and spot cleaned, Ella Lou mended and now we have beautiful quilt that has been used for forty five years by many children. It is placed in the parlor in honor and in memory of every name on it. One patch on this quilt reads (WSCS Ebenezer Church Muddy Creek S.C.) . Some that are not here any more and some of us here are happy that Muddy Creek is on this Memorial quilt, because we believe that it says to others that we are a loving and caring community.
