BYLAWS OF THE
SEASIDE EMMAUS COMMUNITY
OF CONWAY, SOUTH CAROLINA
Article I – Name
The name of this community shall be the Seaside Emmaus Community of Conway, South Carolina, hereinafter referred to as Community.
Article II – Object
Section 1. The object of this Community shall be to inspire, challenge, and equip church members for Christian action, in their home churches, places of work, and communities through the Emmaus experience.
Section 2. This Community is affiliated with and operates under the auspices of the Walk to Emmaus, The Upper Room Ministries, of Nashville, Tennessee.
Article III – Members
Section 1. All persons who have completed a weekend experience of the Walk to Emmaus sponsored by Seaside Emmaus Community shall be members of the Community.
Section 2. Persons who have completed a Walk to Emmaus, Cursillo, Tres Dias, Via deCristo, Life, Kairos, Chrysalis may become members by participating in the activities of the Seaside Community and asking the secretary of the Community to include their names in the mailing list.
Section 3. Members may resign from the Community through written notice to the secretary.
Section 4. The secretary will furnish written confirmation, upon request, of membership to a person who has been a member and who moves to another locale or lives in another, and wishes to become a member of another Emmaus Community.
Article IV – Board of Directors
Section 1. Direction of the Community shall be vested in a Board of Directors.
Section 2. There shall be 15 elected members of the Board of Directors. The elected members may be laity or clergy. The Spiritual Director of the Community shall serve on the Board of Directors as a voting member.
Section 3.
Section 4. Officers shall be Lay Director, Assistant Lay Director (who would also serve as Nominating Committee Chairperson and Team Selection Committee Chairperson, Treasurer, and Secretary. In case of absences will chair the meetings in the above order.
Section 5. Officers shall be elected annually by the Board of Directors at the April meeting for a one-year term of office effective with the close of the April meeting. Officers may be elected to succeed themselves if they have time remaining on their term of office.
Section 6. The Board shall meet on a regular monthly basis unless otherwise ordered by the Community Lay Director.
Section 7. Eight members of Board of Directors present at duly called meeting shall constitute a quorum.
Section 8. The Board of Directors shall elect the Spiritual Director of the community annually. Term of office shall begin April 1. The nominating committee shall make nomination for the Spiritual Director. The Spiritual Director shall be elected by December 15. The Spiritual Director may be replaced during the term by ten affirmative votes.
Section 9. The immediate past Lay Director of the Board will serve on the Board of Directors one additional year or the normal term class to which elected, whichever is longer.
Section 10. Special Board meetings may be called by the Lay Director when requested in writing by eight members of the Board.
Section 11. Vacancies on the Board. The Board may elect persons, upon nomination by any board member to fill a vacant term until the next regular election for that term. Such persons are eligible for election to a full term by the community at such regular annual election.
Article V – Committees
Section 1. The Lay Director of the Board shall name Board members to Chair committees as outlined in the Standing Rules.
Section 2. The Lay Director of the Board shall be an ex-officio member of all standing committees.
Article VI – Walk to Emmaus
Section 1. The Community shall follow the Letter of Agreement of the National Emmaus Movement on the formation of the three-day (72 hours) experience “Walk to Emmaus.” The Letter of Agreement is attached hereto.
Section 2. The Board of Directors shall have general oversight in all matters relating to the Seaside Community Walk to Emmaus.
Section 3. The Board of Directors shall choose a Lay Director for each Seaside Community Walk to Emmaus. Lay Director for the Walk to Emmaus shall be a person who has served in a variety of functions such as auxiliary, given several talks, and served as Assistant Lay Director. No gifts will be given to/by the Lay Director of Emmaus Walks to/by team members. The hand cross used in the chapel during a Walk will be given to the Lay Director at the Closing by the Spiritual Director for the Walk to Emmaus. The Lay Director may not succeed himself/herself in a consecutive Walk to Emmaus.
Section 4. The Board of Directors shall choose a Spiritual Director for each Seaside Community Walk to Emmaus.
Section 5. Pilgrims for Walk to Emmaus must be sponsored by a member of the Emmaus or Chrysalis Community and must be 18 years of age.
Article VII – Amendments
Section 1. Proposed amendments must be presented to the total Board Memberships one-month in advance and voted in the affirmative by ¾ vote of the Board then circulated to the general Community for mail vote. Adoption required simple majority of ballots returned.
