Welcome to the Spartanburg District Lay Speaking Ministry

We are available to speak for special occasions at your church or other Christian events that may need a speaker. We will come to speak to your UMM, UMW or Bible Study. We are available wherever and whenever a pastor or committee chair feels the need for a speaker.

We have been providing a speaker for Sunday morning worship at a local nursing home for the past two years.

We have speakers available to fill a pulpit with very short notice. Some have preached with only 2 hours notice. We are ready and eager to serve.

We may also be able to offer some courses at your local church if needed.

The Spartanburg District offers courses in the Spring and the Fall of every year. We offer Basic, Youth Basic and the Refresher Course during each session. We also offer 2 or 3 Advanced Courses each session.

In April a Retreat is held at White Oak Conference Center in Winnsboro. This weekend retreat offers Basic, Youth Basic and 2-3 Advanced Courses.

Persons having completed the Basic or Youth Basic Course and at least (1) Advanced Course are Certified Lay Speakers.  They must complete a course every three years to maintain their status. This may be the Refresher Course or another Advanced Course.

Lay Speakers (Local and Certified) are required to complete an Annual Report and submit this report at their Local Church Charge Conference. The Charge Conference will approve them for re-certification at that time. Those not submitting this Annual Report will be dropped from the Active List.
